Spot-Specific Tactics
How anglers target Whiting at mapped spots.
Standard double-dropper rig with No. 2 hooks and a 2–4 oz pyramid sinker. Bait with sand fleas, fresh-peeled shrimp, or Fishbites. Work the clean side of the current, not the dead center of the cut. Short casts outproduce long bombs here.
Single No. 4 hook on a 12-inch fluorocarbon leader with a 1 oz pyramid sinker. Small pieces of shrimp, cut sandworm, or Fishbites. Cast into the inside edge of the first trough. Whiting hit fast and hard — you'll feel a sharp double-tap. Set immediately.
No. 4 hook, 1 oz pyramid, small shrimp or Fishbites. Cast 30 yards into the first trough. Whiting travel in schools — once you catch one, stay put. They'll bite every 2–3 minutes until the school moves. This is your backup plan when pompano aren't cooperating.
No. 4 hook, small shrimp pieces, 1 oz pyramid sinker. Cast into the first trough. Whiting are the most reliable bite in any conditions — they'll eat when nothing else will. Good for filling the cooler when the glamour species aren't cooperating.
Downsize to small shrimp pieces on a light double-drop rig and cast just past the shore break. Whiting often feed inside the pompano line. If taps are constant but hookups are low, shorten the bait and hook gap.
Recommended gear
Tackle matched to these tactics and conditions.
Hayabusa Pompano Rig (6-pack)
Pre-tied double-drop rigs with orange floats and gold hooks. Saves time on the beach and produces as well as custom-tied rigs for most anglers.
Fishbites E-Z Flea (Sand Flea Flavor)
When you can't find live sand fleas, these are the next best thing. Tip them on your pompano rig hooks for scent attraction. They stay on the hook better than real fleas in heavy current.
