Spot-Specific Tactics
How anglers target Cobia at mapped spots.
Sight-fish cobia cruising past the pier in March-May. Pre-rig a 1 oz jig with a 4-inch curly tail in brown or green, 30 lb fluoro leader. When you spot a cobia shadow, pitch the jig 10 feet ahead of the fish, let it sink, and twitch it. They'll either eat it or ignore it — no second chances.
Pre-rig a 2 oz bucktail jig with a 4-inch curly tail in brown or green, 30 lb fluoro leader. Stand high on the rocks and watch for dark shapes cruising 1–3 feet below the surface in March-May. Pitch the jig 15 feet ahead of the fish, let it sink to their depth, and twitch. One shot — they eat or they don't.
Large live shrimp or a 3/4 oz jig tipped with a strip of cut mullet. Walk the beach edge and look for cobia following stingrays across the sandy lagoon bottom — they're visible in the calm, clear water. Cast 5 feet ahead of a following fish and let the bait sink. Spring (March-May) is peak migration.
