Spot-Specific Tactics
How anglers target Mangos at mapped spots.
At night under the pier lights, free-line live shrimp on a small 1/0 hook with 15 lb fluoro leader. Let it drift naturally into the shadow line. They're leader-shy — the lighter you go, the more you'll hook.
12 lb fluoro leader, No. 1 hook, small live shrimp or cut shrimp. Drop right against dock pilings and seawall edges. Snapper are leader-shy — the lighter you go, the more bites you get. Chum with crushed shrimp to concentrate them.
Chum with small pieces of cut shrimp and sardine to draw snapper out of the pilings. Fish a small No. 2 hook with a tiny piece of shrimp or cut sardine on 10 lb fluoro — no weight. Let it drift with the current into the chum slick. Snapper are extremely leader-shy. Three-pound test is not too light.
Small No. 1 hook with a tiny piece of shrimp or cut sardine on 12 lb fluoro leader. Drop straight to the base of the jetty rocks on the downcurrent side. Snapper hold deep and tight to structure. Chum with cut shrimp pieces to bring them out. Light tackle only — they're extremely leader-shy in clear water.
Small live shrimp or cut pilchard on a 1/0 hook, 15 lb fluoro, split shot. Drop straight down along the pier pilings. Snapper stay tight to structure — a foot away from the piling is too far. Light pressure on the hookset, then turn the fish away from the pilings immediately.
