Florida fishing intelligence — Redfish

Redfish
Treat the channel edges as ambush lanes and fish moving current, not dead water.
Indian River Lagoon redfish are catch-and-release only, so this is a confidence signal more than a cooler plan.

Spot-Specific Tactics
How anglers target Redfish at mapped spots.
Cut mullet or live shrimp on a fish-finder rig, cast parallel along the riprap edge on incoming tide. Reds cruise the edges looking for crabs getting flushed out of the rocks. The bite feels like a slow pull — don't jerk, just reel tight and lift.
Gold spoon or live shrimp on a weedless hook. Target the edges of exposed oyster bars on the higher tide stages. Reds cruise the bar perimeter looking for crabs. Cast to the slightly deeper water just off the bar edge, not on top of it.
Kayak or wade the mangrove shorelines on the interior bayward side during higher tide stages. Gold weedless spoon or live shrimp cast tight to the mangrove root overhang. Reds tuck into the root systems at high water looking for crabs. The eat happens within 2 seconds of the bait landing — be ready.
Kayak the mangrove shorelines east of the bridge during the top of the incoming tide. Gold weedless spoon or live shrimp cast within 6 inches of the roots. Reds push into the mangrove roots at high water to ambush crabs and shrimp getting flushed out.
On the top half of the incoming tide, pitch a live shrimp or small gold spoon within a foot of the mangrove roots. Reds nose into the shade looking for shrimp and crabs. If you miss the root line by several feet, reel in and recast instead of dragging dead water.
Live shrimp or cut mullet on a 2/0 circle hook with a 3/4 oz egg sinker, 30 lb fluoro leader. Cast into the current seam where the inlet current meets the longshore drift. Let the bait drag naturally. Redfish move along this seam on incoming tide at dawn. The bite is a slow, heavy pull — don't set, just reel tight.
Recommended gear
Tackle matched to these tactics and conditions.
Penn Slammer IV 4500 Spinning Reel
When the tarpon shows up and you need to not lose. Full IPX6 sealed body, 30 lbs of drag, CNC gear technology. This is your big-game inshore reel.
Owner Mutu Light Circle Hooks (2/0-4/0)
The gold standard for live bait fishing in Florida. Light wire for better hook penetration, circle design for clean jaw hookups. Use 2/0 for shrimp, 3/0-4/0 for mullet and pilchards.
